It is located in the municipality of\u00a0<strong>El Pinar, on the island of El Hierro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek Claudio Ptolemy was establishing terrestrial coordinates and the Island of El Hierro was the westernmost point known, the end of the world, so there was no better point from which to start counting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In 1634<\/strong>\u00a0Cardinal Richelieu, at the service of Louis XIII, brought together astronomers, mathematicians and other wise men with the intention of\u00a0<strong>establishing a universal zero meridian and concluded that<\/strong>\u00a0El Hierro<strong>\u00a0met the best conditions<\/strong>, in particular, its westernmost end,\u00a0<strong>the Punta de Orchilla<\/strong>. In addition, it was a good way to divide the Old and the New World.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, in 1724, a trip was made to establish its exact situation, hence in many maps between the sixteenth and seventeenth century appears the Orchilla meridian as the 0.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Orchilla Lighthouse was built on top of the line of representation of said meridian<\/strong>\u00a0that was also one of the most used until 1884, when it was moved to Greenwich near London, after the Washington Conference. Hence,\u00a0<strong>El Hierro is also known as the Meridian Island.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Punta Orchilla Lighthouse like?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon reaching the Punta de Orchilla you will see this emblematic lighthouse right at the footsteps of a huge volcano named Monta\u00f1a de Orchilla.\u00a0<strong>The lighthouse was first lit on September 25, 1933<\/strong>, so that navigators could have a lighthouse with flashes every 5 seconds.
